The image below displays the stress distribution of an aluminum balcony railing subject to a horizontal uniform load applied on the top rail. By using Dlubal Software's stand-alone program SHAPE-THIN, the cross-section of the railing posts was optimized to reduce the stress experienced at critical locations while maintaining the largest possible span between posts.
SHAPE-THIN enables users to define their own library of cross sections which can readily be transferred to RFEM. The program automatically calculates section properties and provides information on stress distributions and strengths of resistance. Internal forces obtained from RFEM can be imported to SHAPE-THIN where the section of interest may then be designed. It is the ideal program for conducting new and parametric studies on custom cross sections.
